Speaking about culture, it is different from one country to others. Indonesian culture is different from America culture, where many Indonesian people must speak and write in English with American style.
Many Indonesian people use English, but not all of them can understand the language number one well, including me. I feel difficult to understand some expression of English. One of my weaknesses is seldom read and listen references in English. Moreover I seldom read American culture. This is one of my problems in understanding English.
Therefore, I want to share a little habit of Indonesian language as verbal expressions. Those are He..he.., ha..ha.., hiks..hiks, hmmm…
The expressions above are same with emoticons.
He..he.. means smile
ha..ha.. means laugh
hiks..hiks.. means smile tend to sad
hmm….means infuriate, annoyed (or angry)
Users of compute usually emoticons, among others: J means smile/happy, L means sad.
Although emoticons tend to be more understood by many people as standard for communication, especially in Internet, I persistently prefer using He..he.., ha..ha.., and so on. I don’t know what is my reason? I just use them.
