Expert system is computer-based system that uses knowledge, fact, and intellectual activity technique to solve problem what usually can be solved by an expert only in certain field (Martin & Oxman 1988 in Kusrini 2006: 11).
Expert system is a system that is made as a consultant or an expert in certain field/study that can answer questions and give advices what need (Jogiyanto 2005: 838).
If we have question or some problem, then we want to ask an expert to get the answer or solution. For example, students ask teachers, patients ask doctors, and so on. In simple, expert system is like a doctor, consultant, teacher, and so on. In other word, expert system can substitute role of doctor, consultant, teacher, and other experts.
Will expert system substitute role of human expert 100%?
No, because an expert system is built by expert of computer with assistance from some expert outside computer specialization. For example, an expert of computer wants to make an expert system for teeth consultation, so he/she must ask assistance from a dentist. In this case, a computer expert must build good cooperation with needed experts.
In campus, expert system is frequently discussed in chapter about artificial intelligence. Expert system is known as a system that has intelligence and it can learn from users’ activities before. Beside it, Decision Support System (DSS) is also often discussed as an intelligent system too is like expert system (ES).
