Difference of Adjectives in Indonesian and English

When practicing adjectives (kata sifat) in Indonesian language, we must remember that its pattern is different from English pattern.

For example:
1. English: small book
Indonesian: buku kecil (book small)

2. English: big man
Indonesian: laki-laki besar (man big)

3. English: beautiful girl
Indonesian: gadis cantik (girl beautiful)
Some times “beautiful girl” is translated becoming “gadis yang cantik” (Added “yang”)
In English, we can find that “yang” is “who, which, where, that, whom”. But in Indonesian, word “yang can be used between two words (such as gadis yang cantik) or between two sentences (such as: Saya menyukai bunga yang kamu suka = “I like flower what you like”)

4. English: black stone
Indonesian: batu hitam

5. English: popular leader
Indonesian: pemimpin terkenal

Happy learning Indonesian language and get ready to visit this beautiful country! J
